Mochitsuki is a traditional event in which steamed glutinous rice is pounded using a mallet and mortar to make mochi.
It is also held to make kagami mochi, a type of rice cake offered as New Year's offerings.
Mochitsuki also symbolizes the coming together of families and local residents through collaborative work and deepening bonds.
